About us

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is Britain’s statutory regulator of occupational health and safety. Our work covers a varied range of activities: shaping and reviewing regulations, producing research and statistics, investigating incidents and enforcing the law.

HSE’s Science Division (HSE-SD), based at the HSE Science and Research Centre in Buxton, Derbyshire is one of the world’s leading providers of workplace health and safety research, training and consultancy, employing around 420 scientific, medical and technical specialists across a wide range of disciplines. We have been developing health and safety solutions for over 100 years, so we know what goes wrong in the workplace and why.

Our Ergonomics and Human Factors Specialists have a breadth of experience in providing independent, specialist support to organisations. Working in multidisciplinary teams, our specialists review and optimise the relationships between people and their physical and social context of work to deliver solutions that bring business benefits through safe, healthy and more effective work processes.

Our capabilities encompass a wide range of topics, including:

  • Behaviour Change
  • Fatigue
  • Future workforce demographics
  • Human factors in design
  • Human factors in process design (COMAH)
  • Human factors in automation
  • Human factors in accident investigation
  • Improving human performance
  • Leadership
  • Reducing human error
  • Safety Culture
  • Worker Engagement

This breadth of expertise underpins our strength in building multidisciplinary teams to create practical, useful solutions. These solutions can take the form of targeted research, expert advice and consultancy, testing and modelling, or specialised training.
