Strengthening carer response to medication administration

 

CIEHF Patient Safety Champion Dominic Furniss, talked to top social care editor Ailsa Colquhoun of Care Home Management this month and her 15,000 readers, about medication management in residential care homes and the human factors strategies and techniques that should be explored to narrow this margin for error.

"Different bottles, packets, faded labels, new dosages, new colours; a myriad of factors to be scrutinised by care workers every day as they administer resident medication" said Dominic. And while the current National Institute for Health and Care Excellence guidance states that care home providers ‘should ensure that a robust process is in place for identifying, reporting, reviewing and learning from medicines errors involving residents’, there is far more that can be done to support staff, he believes.
