Introduction to human factors

Who should attend?
This course is primarily intended for managers, supervisors, team leaders etc., who work in industrial, high hazard, process, chemical and nuclear industries, with a genuine interest in improving operator reliability and reducing errors and their associated consequences. The course is also very useful for engineers and designers responsible for designing systems and equipment for use in such industries, in order to gain a new perspective of user requirements. This might include people involved with the design of control rooms, workstations, Programmable Electronic System (PES) interfaces, alarm systems, etc. It is intended as a general introduction to behaviours, human reliability and human error.

Why should I attend?
It is the intent of the course to improve general understanding of human factors and how they affect human performance. There are many tools available which focus on modifying the behaviour of front line operating personnel without necessarily looking at underlying factors. However, this course is intended to guide the attendee on considering behaviours more widely in terms of:

  • the factors that drive behaviours
  • the way we behave differently and make different types of mistakes in different behaviour modes, and therefore
  • the different things that we must put in place in order to improve reliability and reduce human error

What will I learn?
The overall objective of the course is that people leave with:

  • An understanding that people’s performance is affected by many things, and that achieving good performance and reducing the consequence of errors requires consideration of a number of factors.
  • An understanding that focussing solely on the observable behaviours of front line staff will have limited benefits in the long term.
  • Some practical tools that can be used when considering people within their working environment.
  • Course duration
    The course itself lasts one day. However, when all attendees are from a single organisation, it is recommended that a second day be utilised to apply the principles learned on Day 1, to one or two practical workplace examples, with which the organisation has had known issues. For example, scrutiny of an error-prone activity, utilising the operating procedures and operator experience etc., to develop and propose an improved process and procedure that takes account of human factors. This has worked very well in practice during previous courses, and gives the customer a tangible output from the training process.

    Course content
    The course is broken down into the following modules:

    • What are human factors, human performance and behavioural safety?
    • Process safety and personal safety.
    • Some theory of behaviours and behavioural safety.
    • The relationship between behaviour types, errors and factors affecting human performance.
    • A human factors framework and how it can be used.
    • Practical examples exercise (full group, facilitator led).
    • External Event DVD 1, using the human factors framework (full group, facilitator led).
    • External Event DVD 2, using a simple error analysis (small groups).

    The course is designed to be interactive, with only the essential theory elements being conveyed in a classroom fashion. More than half of the day involves practical exercises either involving the full group or small groups of 3-4 individuals. The course is designed for a maximum of 12 attendees. The day is run with regular breaks at least once per hour.

    Assessment
    There is no assessment, however, attendees are encouraged to complete all of the exercises and retain the output of these analyses as guidance for future considerations.

    What’s included?
    The training course includes the delivery of the package by a qualified and experienced human factors specialist who will be a Registered Member of the Institute of Ergonomics and Human Factors (IEHF) and all associated required materials. Each attendee will receive a 30-page booklet with all of the pertinent issues discussed within the day, including guidance and tools that can be utilised in the workplace following completion of the course. Accommodation and location arrangements can be organised to suit the needs of the customer. Facilities can be arranged by Ergonomic Systems Limited, or the customer as preferred.
