ATLAS – Advanced Teaching, Learning & Assessment Skills

1 October 2012 by Admin

Summary: This 2-4 day course provides you with opportunities to develop a wider understanding of how adults learn and how professional level knowledge and skills are acquired by trainees.

Provider: NATS
Location: UK
Duration: 2-4 days
Knowledge/experience needed: None
Website: www.nats.co.uk
Email: Lauren.Thomas@nats.co.uk

Who should attend?
The suite of ATLAS modules has been designed specifically for those involved in ATC training, and therefore the CORE, CLASS, SIM and LIVE modules are suitable for ATC college instructors, OTJIs, and training managers, as appropriate to their roles. The CORE and CLASS modules are suitable for anyone involved in teaching, training or instructing adults within occupational/professional and classroom settings.

Why should you attend?
ATLAS draws on the latest human factors and educational research from a wide range of settings, including air traffic control, the military, and higher education. The programme focuses on evidence based teaching – which means that ATLAS covers only those methods which research evidence shows are the most effective. Trainers who complete the ATLAS programme are able to use a wider range of tried-and-tested teaching methods to provide more effective teaching. Put simply, ATLAS trained trainers will deliver better learning.

What will you learn?
All ATLAS modules are designed around active learning principles, and are highly participative, interactive and engaging. ATLAS CORE is the foundation module, which focuses on adult learning and the use of a wide range of evidence based teaching methods. ATLAS CLASS focuses on applying ATLAS CORE in designing and delivering classroom based training. ATLAS SIM applies CORE knowledge in simulator based ATC training, while ATLAS LIVE focuses on providing training within ATC operations rooms.

Expected outcomes
There are expected outcomes for each module of the ATLAS programme, appropriate to the module aims. The aims of ATLAS CORE, for example, are:

  • To provide delegates with opportunities to develop a wider understanding of how adults learn and how professional level knowledge and skills are acquired by trainees
  • To provide delegates with the knowledge and research required to challenge less effective teaching, learning and assessment practices, and to develop an approach to training which focuses on continual improvement
  • To demonstrate a wide range of well researched teaching, learning and assessment techniques, and to encourage delegates to begin applying some of these methods in their own training activities, as appropriate
  • To equip delegates with advanced teaching, learning and assessment techniques, so that they can provide a positive, constructive and supportive training environment to optimise every trainee’s chance of success.

Course duration
ATLAS CORE – 4 days, one day of which is an educational visit
ATLAS CLASS – 2 days
ATLAS SIM – 2 days
ATLAS LIVE – 3 days

Course content
The content of the CORE module is focused on adult learning principles and covers a wide range of effective teaching methods. CLASS, SIM and LIVE modules focus on applying what has been covered in the CORE module within a range of different training settings.

Assessment
Assessment of ATLAS is via a transfer of training portfolio, which delegates complete on their return to work. In completing the portfolio, delegates are required to demonstrate the use of selected techniques, methods and principles taught on ATLAS in their day-to-day training roles

What’s included
All teaching, instructional materials and handouts. There are additional charges associated with obtaining the recommended course textbook, and the educational visit which is required on ATLAS CORE. Accommodation and travel costs are also excluded.

Recommended pre-requisites
ATLAS CORE is the foundation module, and all delegates are advised to complete this module as a pre-requisite before progressing through the rest of the ATLAS programme.
