Nuclear Ergonomics
Over the coming years the nuclear industry is set to face a number of challenges. Aging plants are set to be decommissioned and new plants, both power generation and otherwise, are likely to be constructed. For all such developments the need for ergonomics to be applied appropriately is apparent, and an increasing number of us will find ourselves engaged in delivering ergonomic solutions to new developments and assurance work to maintain existing plants.
The nuclear industry has applied ergonomics for many years and has pioneered the practice of human reliability assessment. However, opportunities are there to consolidate and develop the approach to ergonomics within the industry. To this end the two key aims of the SIG are as follows: To improve the standard of ergonomics applied across the nuclear industry. To raise the profile of ergonomics across the nuclear industry.
In general terms the Nuclear SIG has been set up to provide an independent forum for ergonomics specialists within the nuclear industry to work together to develop both refined and novel approaches to the application of ergonomics and to discuss arising issues. Interest in the group thus far has been strong with representatives from all areas of the industry requesting membership. Initially the group will aim to clarify a set of objectives borne out of the key aims.
