Requirements for Fellowship

1 Eligibility for Registered Membership

Applicants for election for Fellowship should normally be eligible for Registered Membership (or be a Registered Member), and the basis shall be the provision of documentary evidence of their qualifications and an appropriately detailed CV and publications list. These must provide the PAB with evidence of the applicant having met the requirements for eligible work experience, mentored supervision in their early career, and that they convey information equivalent to that which could be provided by log books. Applicants may wish to review the requirements for Registered Membership.

Notes: The assessors will bear in mind that the award of Fellowship should reflect substantial service to the profession of ergonomics. Council has emphasised that the qualification 'normally' in any of these rules allows discretion in interpreting the rules in individual cases. Assessors will need to satisfy themselves that applicants would have fulfilled the requirements in respect of subject matter coverage in their early career, together with mentoring as appropriate.

2 Eligible Work Experience and Senior Professional Responsibility

Applicants for election for Fellowship should normally have made a significant contribution to the practice of, teaching of, and/or research in ergonomics for at least ten years (or its part-time equivalent) subsequent to their being eligible for Graduate or Associate Membership of the Institute. During this period they will be required to have carried senior professional responsibility for at least five years (or its part-time equivalent).

Notes: Significant contributions to 'practice' might include the building up of a substantial consultancy service, or developments in techniques. For 'teaching', there should be emphasis on innovation in the design and delivery of courses. For 'research', the evidence will usually be a coherent series of papers and research reports. In all three categories, assessors may rely on publications in the applied and research literature. Examples of senior professional responsibility could include project management, team or capability group leadership, or significant financial or management responsibility; all to be undertaken within an ergonomics context.

3 Requirements for Referees

Applicants for election to Fellowship should provide the names of three referees, all members of the Institute and at least two being Fellows. At least one referee, who is a Fellow, must be employed in a different organisation from that of the applicant. Overseas applicants who are unable to provide details of referees who are members of the Institute may provide referees who are of an equivalent standing in their own national or international ergonomics/human factors society or related professional body.

Notes: The assessors should be appropriately flexible in respect of the requirements for referees for overseas applicants, bearing in mind that such applicants may not readily be able to meet our exact requirements because of geographic or professional development limitations.
