Integral planning and support for Team GB by Ben Aherne, Business Development Manager.

In the lead up to the Olympics, Loughborough University hosted Team GB for their preparation for what turned out to be a hugely successful campaign and a record medal haul. This involved 550 athletes, 450 coaches and 300 volunteers passing through the campus for a series of events including sports training camps, media days, Olympic torch relay and the kitting out of the whole team.

The task for the university was to create the ultimate sports environment and ensure that key operational services of catering, accommodation, logistics, security, and provision of sports facilities were effectively integrated with Team GB planning. A key element was the development of partnerships with many agencies at both the regional and national level. This was a major systems integration activity that needed to be carried out whilst maintaining business as usual on campus for our 16,000 students and more than 3,000 employees.

Ben Aherne was the man with the responsibility for managing this; he will describe the challenges that the university faced and his experience of planning and co-ordination to address them. He will present lessons learned and the recipe for success.

The Olympics brought considerable benefit both to the university and the town; hosting Team GB was a challenge for which failure was unthinkable. In fact, it turned out to be an example of excellence and Ben will tell us how he achieved that.
