There is a need for rigour in everything that we do as science or engineering professionals. One of the main reasons why this rigour is needed is that it is very easy for things to go wrong. Barely a day passes without hearing or reading about some project failure or disaster which has the potential to harm people, the environment and, lest we forget, our reputations! In order to prevent such failures and disasters, it is deemed as good practice to put model-based systems engineering (MBSE) into place that describe our competencies and capabilities on the business – but is this enough?

This presentation looks at the realities of implementing MBSE in terms of ‘people, process and tools’ and suggests that any single one of these is simply not enough. We need effective processes to demonstrate capability, but we also need appropriately competent people and sharp tools to realise these processes successfully.

Professor Jon Holt, Global Head of Systems Engineering, Atego Systems, uses such diverse subjects as magic, Disney rodents and elaborate headwear to illustrate that any business endeavour requires people, process and tools to be successful. These points are tackled in a presentation that is intended to inform, entertain and provoke discussion.
