What is this award for?
Any final year student (undergraduate or Masters) who has produced an outstanding essay on ergonomics/human factors, whilst on an IEHF-accredited course. The essay must relate information and communications technology (ICT) to ergonomics. Although there is no set topic and students may use essays submitted as part of their normal coursework, in choosing a topic students are advised to
prepare an essay or choose a piece of coursework that:
- Has a large element of information and communications technology (ICT) and ergonomics within it.
- Specifically states the ICT / ergonomics issues being addressed.
- Makes reference to previous research in relevant areas.
- Interprets and discusses alternative views.
- Is clearly expressed and of a high quality in terms of its presentation.
What do you get if you win the award?
The winner will be presented with £250 and a certificate.

Who was Richard Holman?
Richard Holman was born in 1954, and graduated in ergonomics from Loughborough University of Technology in 1975. After six years in ergonomics with British Aerospace, he joined the Admiralty Research Establishment at Portsdown, working particularly on human computer interaction problems and system design. He was leader of the Human Factors Section within the Maritime Command System Division of the Defence Research Agency at Portsdown, having been head of it for two years until his untimely death in 1992. This Prize was first awarded in his memory.
